I saw this on YouTube and decided to try it:




I have an 8 cup coffee pot and tried it. It is actually very smooth if you like regular coffee. Might be good to have as a backup when the power goes out.

The guy is definitely a character.

Vacuum pot coffee done correctly gets one as close to the cupping brew method one can come by. The process he demonstrates in the video with a 4 min steep after coming to boil is as close as one can get to vacuum pot coffee except without the vacuum draw down which is replaced with dropping the grounds with a dash of cool water.

Couple this with the fact that there was some decent canned coffee between the 1940s and 70s. Foldgers, Maxwell house and a few others had some excellent Colombian blends to offer tasting nothing like the swill sold in the red and green plastic cans today.

I'll bet a lot of the cattle drive coffee back then outdid some of our carefully roasted and brewed java!

I have a vacuum pot too and agree that it is a smooth cup of coffee.

You would think your cup would be full of grounds but using some cold water at the end seems to force them to the bottom. I like to try different ways of making coffee. This is very simple.

My son is interested in Turkish coffee so we bought him an ibrik and hand grinder for Christmas. Will see how that goes.

I've had more than one very knowledgeable coffee aficionados tell me that one of the top tasting coffees they ever experienced was turkish coffee prepared in the traditional manner where it's boiled over and over with a very fine grind. You would think just the opposite would be the outcome but must be something to it. I need to find a way to try it someday.

Agreed Allen -- I have an Ibrik but when I researched the traditional Turkish way of roasting I chickened out. If memory serves me correctly is a much longer roast time (~19min or something like that) with a much gentler RoR. But then again, my memory fails me all the time Roflmao
