Yet another filter thread...
CharcoalRoaster
So apparently my stack of Melitta filters has been exhausted and I'm temporarily stuck with Walmart ones for my freshly roasted Ethiopia Hambela.

Is the difference simply quality?

Am I going to regret using these?!

BenKeith
Put one in your mouth and just let it sit there a minute or chew on it a little. If you get that funky paper taste, it's probably going to add that same flavor to your coffee. Some say to rinse them with hot water. That might help but I find I still get that flavor in my coffee

CharcoalRoaster
Hahaha ok, I'll give it a shot. Have you ever done a side-by-side taste test like that between filter brands?

BenKeith
On the rare occasion I make coffee in the Bunn I use Melitta filters. I've never tried any other brand natural if that was a Walmart brand natural filter.
I don't think I've used a white filter that does not give off that bad flavor.
I mainly use my AeroPress so don't have much of a choice on what filter I use, so I just flush a lot of hot water through them. At least they are very small.

There are definitely differences in the finished cup from various filters. I've never used Walmart brand before but from all the ones I've used my preference is for Filtropia. I did some side by side blind tastes and that was my preference with Melitta second. I found that the Filtropia toned down any slight bitterness from fines
