My bean cooler is 2 box fans both on high facing out I just attached plywood to all 4 sides screwing them to the fans then I placed Plywood pieces in each corner and used silicon to seal the entire inside.

Then I cut a circle (well almost a circle) in the top.

I got a metal grate trashcan cut the bottom off of it and put a metal colander in the bottom attached with wire to the trash can.

I bent in the bottom of the trashcan just to ease the putting it in the cooler.

I also can use this for smaller batches this will work for up to 2#

if I use the larger one the air just rushes over the top instead of thru the beans....s:4

I got the Trashcan at walmart in a "desk kit" I cut the bottom off because a solid bottom would not allow air to get to the bottom.

I got a 3 piece screen colander set from Wally world as well

Everything re sized perfectly. I got to tell you - I love the cooler. I don't currently need anything of that size, but when I do....your idea will be my pattern.

well to be honest my cooler is similar to Java Jerry's he has one fan facing down below a flat square basket I just modified his idea to meet a larger bean mass.....
Thanks Jerryc:2c:2

Dennist3, first let me give my gratitude for your service! It just occurred to me to read your credentials. Second, I liiiiike the cooooooler. I wonder if the fans blew inward would that help jostle some more of that pesky chaff out?

dude! sweet setup! one suggestion: add a gearhead (ie low rpm, high torque) motor at the bottom of the colander w/ stirring arms on its shaft. it'll do the stirring for you, not to mention helping w/ chaff removal.

Thanks for the support!

Chaff removal I just pick up the basket with the beans once cool and place them next to the fan allowing the fan exhaust to blow away the chaff takes about 15 seconds and a few quick stirs and it's done. c:1

Ideally I plan on being abot to cool the 6# beans in under 20 seconds.
From :@ to thisGrin in 20 sec think I can do it?

Bean cooler in under 20s? how about the inlet of an F18? You should have a few of them handy. hehehehehe

Ascholten
Could always hit them with a CO2 bottle too, after all, they are giving out enough of their own. 20 seconds is not going to happen really. You might get the surface down that quick but the core heat of the beans is going to take a little while longer to make its way out of the bean mass and be gone. Now add a few more pounds of beans sitting on each other, the heat is just going into the next one in the bunch.

Id say a minute or two is probably a good time to shoot for on bean cooling. Once you get them under 200 ish degrees, they stop cooking really.

Hmmm dry ice in a cooler, dump the hot beans right on top?
But that could get expensive for multiple batches and multiple loads of dry ice.
