peveleth, It is better if you start a post in the forum with your question. These shouts go away in time.

For Gene Cafe Roasters I have an older Gene Cafe Roaster. Temp fluctuates probably showing age. Question: For recent owners of the newer Gene Cafe Roaster, your opinions?

Morning Ed, I haven't done any green coffee hoarding yet but am hoping the supplies don't end up like the toilet paper isles!

Advice on a new Roaster
jkruer01
Hello, I am currently roasting 1lb of green coffee beans approximately every 5 days using a whirley pop sitting on a cast iron skillet. I am looking for a more automated way to roast beans (my arm is getting tired).

Currently I am looking into either a BBQ roaster or a SC/TO roaster. I really like this setup: http://forum.homeroasters.org/forum/v...ad_id=4291

I can do basic stuff but I am NOT a fabricator/welder/engineer.

What is the best way to get started with either a BBQ roaster or a SC/TO roaster? I am open to other ideas as well.

Here are my needs:

1)Detailed step by step instructions
2)Ability to roast 1lb or more at a time
3)The more automated the better

Thanks!

Koffee Kosmo
Based on your DIY skills
Your best option is a bread maker and heat gun method

If you had better DIY skills I would recommend the KKTO

I second the bread machine/heat gun.

I started on a sc/to and used that for a year before I switched to the bread machine. The shaft mod on the stir crazy can be a bit tricky. If you go this route I can point you to some links that helped me. I used the cheaper turbo oven with the halogen heat source and I found it took just a little too much time to roast a full pound.

The bm/hg does a full lb in 12 minutes for me.

If you need more capacity, I'd suggest going the BBQ route.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the bread maker. Is there a good tutorial for our that you would recommend for this method?

Thanks!

What are the advantages / disadvantages of the KKTO vs SC/To?

Scooter Dog
The KkTO will be better insulated so it will be able to roast at the appropriate times. Also, it uses a faster and stronger motor so the beans will be agitated better, resulting in a more even roast.

The bread machine also is better at agitating than stir crazy.

I'm probably not the one to comment as my experience is limited entirely to drum roasters.

BUT.....

This has never stopped me in the past...

SO.....

Drum roasters rock.
