ET & BT k-type thermocouple

Has anyone used the K type probes sold by Auber?

http://www.auberi...ducts_id=6

I am thinking of (well going to be) putting in an ET and BT probe in my B model Hottop and wondered if anyone has used these before or had opinions of them?

Not me. Mine's got Omega TCs.

Why Auber in particular?

Do you have links to the ones you used?

As far as Auber, I've dealt with them in the past and have been very happy with both the products and customer service I received.

I did a conversion of my Mazzer Super Jolly from a manual doser to an electronic doser and used their pre-assmbled grinder timer which was pretty much a top shelf product (components and assembly) IMHO. http://www.auberi...cts_id=298

Auber sells consumer grade products, and Omega sells laboratory grade products. I've found both to be fine retailers.
Also I've found RTD's to be more accurate than TC's in the 500F
range..but unless you are trying to capture the exothermic point,
a China-built TC is quite adequate...

In the 1sr pic what is the little grinder to the right?
Bad coffee prevails when good coffee roasters stand by and do nothing.

Baratza Maestro plus.

Here is an older family portrait.

Front Baratza Maestro plus (L) | Maestro (R)
Rear Baratza Vario-W (L) | Baratza Preciso/Esatto (C) | Super Jolly (R)

The Maestro and Vario-W have been replaced by a Forte BG which has not arrived yet and the SJ has been converted to doserless electronic/timed since the pic was taken.

I decided to spring for Omega probes. They are a bit more expensive, but the difference isn't worth a hill of beans (pun intended), in the overall scheme of roasting-related expenses?

I use cheap K-type thermocouples from ebay and they work well. My opinion is that thermal insulation of the probes from the back of the roaster is most important part of this mod.
I like RAG's solution:

I used a K probe 6" long in the HT for several years, purchased from Auber. Never had a problem. It got dropped a few times, since it is a 'Thru-the-Bean-Chute' style probe. Stll, never a problem. Customer support when I called and asked questions were very good.

If you're mounting the TCs on and through the back bulkhead -- the most elegant installation -- there's not a lot of room on either side of the bulkhead.

I'm not sure that a 1/2" covered probe -- like the Auber in question -- will completely clear the drum spider.

On the other hand, a "naked" probe can be bent to clear.

I wish I could give you the part numbers for the Omega probes I've got. But one of the nice things about Omega is their phone support. Mine are "ungrounded," "naked" "J" with 2' leads. Tell them what you want.

A very clear set of mounting instructions may be found in THIS pdf. I may or not be able to find a link to the instructions I followed a few years ago (which included a parts list). I'll look, but don't hold your breath.

As a follow up to the PDF, I hear rumors that the Artisan/Phidget may even better setup for roaster control than the Arduino TC/4 setup described. But I'm not competent enough about that stuff to have an opinion.

Have any members used additional k type thermocouples that Hottop uses?

I have an older B model with the button and am going to update to the latest computer which needs the K type. Wondering if I should get 2 more when I order the parts to update.

Reason for updating the roaster is the eject button on the control panel has been going south and sometimes requires several pushes to make contact. I've even had to pull the chaff tray to eject a few times so it is bout time to "fix"

That probe you were inquiring about was not working well for me in my home made roaster, the threaded sleeve had too much mass and made it extremely slow to react. I ended up taking a hack saw to the "screw on sleeve" and taking it off. it's better now...

I am very pleased with the Phidget and it is much cheaper the anything else... $100. the only thing though it is C only... no F display... I'll have to get use to that... and I am canadian ;-)

Is this the one? http://www.phidge..._id=1048_0

I keep hearing about this product. Sounds good if you want to measure temperatures only. I think Artisan will work with it.

marce
Yes that is the Phidget I have. (1048)
It will work with Artisan version 7 coming up soon, I am using a beta version of it right now.

marce
Well I have found out that you CAN have the Phidget display fahrenheit in Artisan, it needs to be changed before you start by pressing the on button.
makes it even better!

are you talking about the Hottop (OEM) thermocouple or the Auber that I first asked about?

the Hottop (OEM) thermocouples are $40 each. I was wondering if they are better?

marce
I was referring to the Auber
