1 lb roasted lasts a week. I can taste the flavor increase to peak, then drop after. Still very good, but interesting to follow the wave of flavor rise and fall.

I seem to have lost any roasting touch I thought I had. Very frustrated to be wasting time and money. I’m hoping someone can provide some insight on roasting at high altitude. I’m at 4400ft. Thank

PID'ed Gas-fired fluid bed roaster

Proximity to Ethiopia and Yemen seems like an advantage. But I talked to a Roaster in Dubai who ships full containers from Ethiopia, and he said for every container load he purchases, they'll let him have 10% of the shipment from the specialty grade coffee. Couldn't get more details on who or how that is imposed, but I got the impression that buying a full container's load is small potatos if you you want to pick and chose your coffee.

That sounds so weird and yet realistically cynical. Maybe the people at http://www.amarog...offee.com/ could provide you with more info, since they organized their farm so they would not be subject to the general rules the state imposes there for the trade. If I understand correctly what others told me.

I like this blower: http://www.ebay.c...338b1fa930

Using two of them, they managed 10kg with ease, can probably do 12kg, but my needs for now are in the 5-7kg. Here's how it does with 7kg:

Roast chamber was copied from RoasterRob's square design here http://forum.home...post_26034

If I extend the chamber a bit higher, it can handle 10kg easily, which I think I'll do, but keep the perforation for 5-7kg until I need to go for 10kg. I see no need to make it wider, unless I want to double the capacity to 15-20kg, and it may only need a 3rd blower for that, and the next in line seivert burner. For 5-7kg, I'll use the 2942 burner.

Thanks Allen and will do, as it progresses. For the most part, it uses the same guts of the 1kg, same valve, PID, electronics and wiring, just using a bigger square RR design, the two blowers and bigger torch. The blower movement is powerful and that was the major concern. Now remains the cooling power :)

Great job!

I sendt you a private message through youtube, basically Im wondering how you have connected the FUJI pid with the proportional gas valve.

Do you use the same PID to contol an electical heating element as the gas valve?

I have the Fuji connected to a driver board, which drives the valve, both made by Clippard.

The Fuji I used for electric heat element had SSR output. For the gas model, I used current output config. They are both Fuji PXG4, just different configuration options.

Hey, I am new to the coffee roasting and have been researching everything involved to use a kelly proportional valve with the pxg or pxr along with artisan. I have seen people talk about the 0-5 or 0-10vdc version of the pxg however all data that I have read about it does not list that as a output option. Was this achieved with a 4-20ma output with a 500 ohm resistor across the output terminals so create a 0-10vdc output? As well, has artisan been developed to the point where it can tune pid values and control the pxg to follow a loaded background?

Hi Shauny and welcome to HRO! For your question start a new thread under "Building a Roaster", "Electric and Gas Heat Sources" so it has it's own home and others can find it.

If you pull up the PXG data sheet at Instrumart,

www.instrumart.co...asheet.pdf

and go to page 2 and under Output Section, [4] Voltage Output it lists 0-10 VDC as one of the options so no need to go through the trouble of converting the 4-20 current . As to Artisan's capabilities in interfacing with the PXG I would need to defer to Marko (MaKoMo) or others with first hand knowledge.

When you post your thread, be sure to include as many details as possible on how you're planning to drive the Kelly valve and anything else will be a big help.

Cheers,

Allen

Hello everyone! It has been a long time. I got a PM from here and it brought a lot of great memory of this forum. Once I opened my roasting business, there is little time to follow online forums.

This is my latest fluid bed,a 10-12kg roaster, and a 20Kg one is soon to follow in our workshop.

Loring 15KG? I am so happy with it that we added a 70Kg next to it Roflmao

We still need fluid beds for Arabic/Turkish roasts, and some times for auction coffees. But Loring is a consistent production workhorse.
