My KKTO Project
galumay
Hi fellow roasters, I am another mad Aussie roaster, I have been using a Behmor up until now and have a La San Marco grinder, the #001 Pharos manual grinder and an Izzo Pompeii Single Group Lever.

I recently upgraded to a KKTO, i bought the complete package from KK and have been installing it in an old desk, I thought other members might like to see the project,

Inspiration comes from a fellow coffee snob by the name of wsully, you can see a youtube video of his setup here, http://www.youtub...b9JKoRvqtI

I have attached a few images of the unfinished project, it has yet to be painted and final installation completed, but I bought a 2nd hand desk, stuck some castors on it, made a box for the KKTO, lagged the KKTO with fire blanket, got a vacuum cleaner and prospecting seive off Feebay and a big plastic bucket from bunnings. I have a short thermocouple coming from Feebay, you can see in the pics that I just have the tip of the long one sticking into the bean mass, it doesnt really work because the rest of the probe is outside the KKTO so the short one should fix that.

Today i chucked a version of the KJM house blend in,
170g Peru Ceja de Selva Estate
140g Nicuraguan La Gloria Las Brisas
225g Ethiopian Ghimbi
170g Sumatra Sigararutang

Probably took it a little further than I would have preferred, say C10 - but couldnt resist having a taste straight out of the roaster - sublime! It amazed me with its balance and flavour, I am sure the Izzo Lever has something to do with that but still a very impressive result.

The vacuum cleaner to suck the beans into the cooler and then provide the cooling air flow is brilliant, as soon as I saw wsully's setup I knew I had to do the same!

Wow, super build of the KKTO! Keep the pics and progress posts coming.

I would be inerested to hear your comments on taste comparisons between the Behmor and your new KKTO once you get comfortable using it. In addition to espresso it would be nice to hear a comparison using brewed coffee.

Yes, great project and well thought out and assembled. Do you keep the equipment outdoors?

Thanks guys, I am not sure I will be able to taste much difference between the Behmor & the KKTO, its really the increased volume of roasts that is the primary motivator!

I do keep it outdoors, its under my back verandah, I live in the tropics and so ambient temperature here is about 28-34C all year.

I will just throw a tarp over the whole thing when not in use - mainly to protect it from the gecko shit!

It looks great and is organized. The box will make insulating the KKTO easier for colder climates. Do you have the entire KKTO with pedestal inside the box?

I would like to see more photos when you get it completed. Good work!

Yes that is a full kit that I assembled for him including the pedestal or as I call it the base hub

First roast he did was a 1kg bag of free green beans we shipped with the roaster

The power was off today so I figured it was a fine time to finish the KKTO project with a coat of paint or two, also a pic showing the lagging.

It will never look this good again!!

I normally take the lagging over the lower silicone ring

I use a cotton towel clipped on with a clothes peg

KK, I think I read that elsewhere, I reckon the fireblanket, in the box, in the tropics should suffice!!

It would be nice for you to give a honest review every now and then for the nice folks of the Home Roasters forum

A bit of artwork would be nice on the box to personalise it

I was trying to fix the link and wondering why it did not work when I saw the date of the post.

I would be happy to fix the images if he can supply the new links.

Galumay's roaster was built by me
He then built a box around it to keep the heat from radiating out

Looks like this one before the box was added

It's a photo of the 1st unit built in 2009
And it's my roaster - still looks like new after a few thousand roasts

Is this the same roaster he wrote these days as being able of 1200 grams ?
I thought that KKTO original design tops at 750 grams ...ThumbsUp
Using second bottom heater, perhaps ?

Yes it's the same roaster
At the beginning we thought that was all it could roast then we went beyond
I personally roast 1kg batches but have roasted 1.2 kg on occasions
