Email address correct. I constantly check junk folder. I turned off, then on, the setting to receive notice.

Drum roaster comparisons thread
stuartgrant
Hey all,

Not that I've decided firmly on whether my eventual roaster will be a drum roaster or not yet, BUT I have been doing some research into different drum designs out there.

I hope this thread will be helpful for people who, like me, are looking into building a drum roaster.

I'd love for people who own/have built a drum roaster to join in and share anything of use here!

I mainly want to look at the characteristics of various drums out there. Attached is a table I made up showing a range of drums, mostly made by people on this forum but also including some others, as well as the commercially available RK drums.

[Special note to itsallaroundyou - I know you haven't finished yours yet so I made a complete guess at what your max capacity might be based on the average load per unit drum volume! It was 1.75lb - take it or leave it!]

In addition to this info it'd be great to know things like rate of airflow, what BTU/hr rating the burner(s) have, and whether or not the roaster is insulated.

Any contributions/thoughts?
Cheers
Stuart.

Thanks for putting this together, interesting that they're all about the same volume.
How about KW & insulation & perforated? in my case 1,000W, 1" kaowool & perforated
Best Regards,
Jon

Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand.

Note that some drums often run optimized at less than capacity. i.e. many roasters using a RK 6# drum may run a 4# charge of beans for optimal performance. Other roasters (Open sky or Jim) were designed around a specific load.
