Wanted to mention a second Chicago opportunity: cupping at Intelligentsia with George Watts (could listen to him all day):

I won't be going down as several of us from GCBC are attending the Coffee Fest later in the month. Pls feel free to join us at the Fest or for dinner afterwards. Good bunch of guys.

Dave, I can't find much about the events/seminars, whatever, for the coffeefest Chi from their website. Is it me?

Actually my wife read about coffee fest Chicago somewhere else on the 'net, and mentioned it to me, which leads me to believe we could support another visit! We've only been there once, we spent a weekend a few anniversairys ago (don't worry, we've been married way less than half of your glorious record!) And, I think we went to the wrong "best Chicago pizza" place last time. We must redeem ouselves!

Oooh. So tempting. Now to see what cheap hotels are available? Gotta keep the price down, you know me!

Hotels are very expensive in Chitown. Two options, stay out in burbs, on train lines (CTA) and train it in. Your end point is Navy Pier (on the Lake).

Second, budd just stayed in a Hotwire booked 4 star hotel, $70 per night. He just bid on it and got it. Keep in mind, they will clip you $30 per night for your car.

Dudes, I will be batching it that weekend with the kids. My lovely wife has already planned to attend a non-coffee related conference. She got to the planner before I could.

Is coffeefest in chi-town annually? Or, perhaps it will dance closer to KC someti.... nevermind. KC is the "flyover capital of the country".

Hopefully, there will be more events later this spring and summer when i can sleep in my car at a rest area. I have been talking to my repair shop about setting up some screen attachments for the windows to provide ventilation without bugs. :)

L-R: Big Mike, cupping budd; CFSheridan; BoldJava. At the Coffee Fest, before 17 coffees. I could have pushed the train home from Chicago to Milwaukee, right thru the 7" of snow that welcomed us iback to the lovely streets of Lake Cheddar.

you guys look like you're in formation. Never knew you to be a wing-man Dave.

Coffee Fest - Was in Chicago. About 1/4 <?> the size of a SCAA meeting. Really geared to the retailer more than any other aspect of the industry.

Cupping course was so poorly presented, I am writing and asking for a refund. I never do that -- not my style, but this course was so poorly done.

Always interesting. Helps you understand the entirity of the industry and what it takes to get a cup to you when you are out and about.

Next visit? Minneapolis, if that is where next SCAA is in 2010...conflicting info shows Anaheim.

Nine of us from Chicago and Lake Cheddar are gathering at my place at High Noon for The Great Hawaiian Throw Down. From our board here, brother Benz will be present.

On the table will be:

^ Hawaiian Pulped Natural, Big Island, Paradise Roasters (very protracted 1st), from Moki's farm
^ Ka'u Cooperative Farms, Pahala, Big Island
http://onocoffee....offee.html If it cups well, I have a call into the farmer on the Big Island tomorrow for details
^ Maui Mokka, Lahaina, Maui (stayed way out of 2nd)
^ A'ama Organic Kona
^ A second Kona
^ Rwanda Cup of Excellence, #18 (smelled like apple wood roasting)
^ Colombian Cup of Excellence, Buena Vista Finca (gorgeous roaster)

To follow? I have done a slow cooked Hawaiian pulled pork with a pineapple juice sauce and a Hawaiian Mahi Mahi ceviche. Of course, local micro-brews:
