Distance between Drum and Burner

What's an ideal distance between the heat source and drum?

With electric elements there's no negative consequences to being real close to the drum as long as no potential for contact.

For gas fired I would keep a minimum of an inch between flame tip and underside of drum at highest firing rate. This will prevent incomplete combustion and carbon depositing on the drum surface.

FWIW, A burner engineer told me 1.5 inches from burner to drum.
